When every student is seen: How AI can empower students with Special Educational Needs

Every child is unique. This is something we all know – but when it comes to the classroom, traditional teaching methods have too often opted for a one-size-fits-all approach. Cavendish Schools around the country have been challenging these methods for years, recognising that young people, especially those with unique learning profiles, have minds which dance to their own rhythm. A one-size-fits-all system can’t harmonise, and instead muffles these students’ creativity and insight.

As educators, we’re constantly looking for methods, tools, or approaches which allow us to personalise education further. Increasingly, we’ve found that one area of growing interest is the careful, ethical use of AI. 

Personalised learning: A promise becoming reality

For students who think differently, whether because of their dyslexia, autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, or other learning difference, the traditional classroom can be a site of barriers, rather than one of open doors. When used correctly, AI tools can help tailor learning experiences to remove these obstacles.

AI-driven tools can now adapt to each student’s pace, preferred way of learning, and level of challenge. A dyslexic student, for example, can use AI text-to-speech to access complex materials independently. A student with attention differences can use intelligent scheduling tools that break tasks into achievable steps, reducing anxiety and promoting self-management. These students may all be in the same classroom, accessing the same curriculum, and using AI to tailor and personalise their learning experiences to suit their unique profiles, preferences and needs. 

Empowering teachers, not replacing them

Contrary to the fear that AI might replace teachers and teaching assistants, its greatest power is in freeing teachers and TAs to be ‘more human’. By automating some administrative tasks or providing data-driven insights into student progress, AI allows teachers to focus on what truly matters: helping pupils to develop creativity, character, confidence and competence.

Cavendish Education has partnered with The Otermans Institute to trial and progress their ‘AI Teacher’ initiative, which offers a powerful example of this shift. Their work demonstrates how AI can deliver consistent, adaptive teaching, providing real-time feedback and personalised learning experiences while real-life teachers remain at the heart of pastoral and relational learning. 

Rather than diminishing the teacher’s role; it amplifies it, ensuring that technology becomes a supportive partner, not a substitute.

Looking ahead

Imagine a classroom where every student has a personalised AI approach, not to do the thinking for them, but to scaffold it and to help them discover how they learn best. 

When we give students tools that cater to their unique ways of thinking and learning, we’re not just helping them catch up. We’re making good on the commitment to celebrate and nurture their uniqueness. It is all about tuning in to how they see the world, what is standing in their way, and how to break down those barriers. 

Advancements in generative AI are happening all around us, and it is our role as educators to identify which tools and methods can truly help reduce obstacles to students’ learning. Careful research and consideration about every new piece of technology that enters the classroom is crucial to ensure these additions are truly fit for purpose.
