Purpose of the Role

The Head of Admissions and Interventions (SENCo) will play a pivotal role in establishing and embedding inclusive practice within the school. With the majority of pupils holding an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), the role is central to ensuring each plan is implemented with fidelity, reviewed regularly, and drives the school’s provision.

The postholder will lead the admissions process, assessing EHCPs and liaising with Local Authorities to determine suitability of referrals. They will also take responsibility for the design, implementation, and evaluation of therapeutic and academic interventions, ensuring they are well-integrated and support pupil progress, wellbeing, and outcomes.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Head of Admissions and Interventions will provide strategic influence, lead teams and departments, and champion the wellbeing and achievement of all pupils. We are seeking a highly experienced SENCo with a proven track record of strategic leadership, staff development, and improving outcomes for pupils with SEMH and ASC needs.

Key Responsibilities

Senior Leadership Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the strategic leadership and direction of the school, shaping whole-school vision and improvement planning.
  • Lead and inspire academic and therapeutic teams, modelling effective leadership and accountability.
  • Take responsibility for designated whole-school initiatives and policies, ensuring impact and compliance.
  • Use data, research, and expertise to influence senior-level decision making.
  • Champion safeguarding, inclusion, and wellbeing across the school.
  • Support the Headteacher in managing change, compliance, and effective deployment of resources.

SENCo Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the strategic development of SEND provision in line with the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Ensure every pupil’s EHCP outcomes are embedded into personalised learning and intervention planning.
  • Oversee EHCP statutory assessments, reviews, and target-setting.
  • Provide training, guidance, and coaching to staff on SEMH/ASC strategies.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of academic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Ensure safeguarding practice is embedded through policy, training, and modelling best practice.
  • Build strong relationships with parents, carers, and pupils, ensuring pupil voice and family input shape provision.
  • Liaise with Local Authorities and external agencies to secure multi-agency support.

Admissions and Interventions Lead Responsibilities

  • Manage the admissions process efficiently, transparently, and in line with statutory frameworks.
  • Assess EHCPs and referral documents to determine suitability for placement.
  • Communicate effectively with Local Authorities, parents, and carers throughout the admissions process.
  • Organise assessments, visits, and transitions for prospective pupils.
  • Maintain accurate admissions records and provide reports for senior leaders and governors.
  • Lead the design, delivery, and evaluation of whole-school interventions that enhance pupil wellbeing, inclusion, and achievement.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential.
  • National Award for SEN Coordination (or willingness to undertake within 2 years) – essential.
  • Further qualifications in leadership, SEND, or SEMH desirable.

Experience

  • Highly experienced SENCo, with substantial experience in a senior leadership role.
  • Extensive experience in specialist or SEMH settings.
  • Proven record of assessing EHCPs and making informed placement decisions.
  • Experience of leading staff teams and driving whole-school interventions.
  • Experience of admissions processes in specialist/independent schools desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of SEMH/ASC needs and effective interventions.
  • Strong understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and statutory duties.
  • Excellent leadership and change management skills.
  • Ability to design, implement, and evaluate targeted interventions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage staff, families, and external partners.
  • Strategic thinker with capacity to balance operational management and long-term planning.
