Learning without anxiety

Natalia,

Age 17

From fear to feeling capable

By the time Natalia* arrived with us in her mid-teens, school had become a source of fear rather than possibility. Anxiety had been part of her life for years, beginning in primary school and gradually shaping how she saw herself as a learner. Panic attacks, disrupted attendance, and repeated experiences of not being fully understood left her believing that she was “useless at everything.”

Although plans and support were in place, they hadn’t translated into day-to-day learning that felt manageable. Over time, anxiety took over, affecting not only progress in school, but confidence, health and emotional wellbeing. Learning felt overwhelming, and giving up often felt safer than trying.

Feeling understood changes everything

What changed was not just the level of support, but the way it was delivered. In a calm, predictable environment where learning differences and emotional needs were addressed together, she began to feel safe again. Specialist teaching for dyslexia and dyscalculia sat alongside embedded Speech and Language Therapy, allowing her to access learning without fear.

Gradually, Natalia’s panic attacks stopped. Confidence returned. In school, staff saw a young person who was calm, emotionally regulated and fully engaged. Attendance rose to 98%, and learning no longer felt like something to endure.

Academically, she is now successfully working towards a combination of GCSEs and Level 2 qualifications, studying for seven courses in total. Teachers describe her as motivated, determined and willing to persevere – a transformation from the student who once felt unable to try.

Looking ahead

With anxiety no longer dominating her day, she is beginning to look ahead with confidence. She plans to continue into Sixth Form, progressing onto Level 3 courses and building the skills she needs for adulthood and independence.
